Calling all wildlife enthusiasts! The Eco Bat Box is available, new for 2016, and is specially designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and attractive permanent roost for bats. Bats are amongst the UK’s most endangered creatures and account for more than a quarter of mammal species in the UK. Fortunately, many people work tirelessly to protect these fascinating creatures and help them to thrive, and now you can be a part of it.
The eco bat box has a UV stabilised, waterproof shell for longevity and durability in all weathers and at all times of year. It is made from 100% recycled plastic that has been collected from UK farms and other sources, to ensure it is environmentally friendly. The internal bat roost chamber is made UK grown rought sawn untreated timber which is perfect for giving bats a good gripping area, and makes it easy for them to hang, roost and move around.
The UK has a variety of bat species, and each one has a different roosting requirement. The eco bat box has two special varieties—cavity and crevice—in order to accommodate as wide a range of these wonderful animals as possible. For bats who love to hang when they roost, such as Noctules and Long-Eared bats, the cavity box is perfect. It features an ideal 60mm wide cavity and extra rough walls to make roosting upside down a breeze. If pipistrelles are more common in your area, you may select the crevice box instead, featuring two 22mm wide crevices for warm, snuggly roosting.
Caring for animals can occasionally be messy work, but not with the Eco Bat Box. The angled baffles incorporated into the design means that waste and droppings simply fall away. The base also features easy access for the bats with a projecting landing ladder.
To optimise the effectiveness of your eco bat box, aim to mount it high on a building or securely in a tree. If possible, a sheltered, sunny place is particularly attractive to bats, but boxes in several positions will provide a range of choice and conditions for the bats. Remember not to the disturb the box itself once mounted unless you have an appropriate license. These precious mammals are protected by law. Bats are highly selective animals and always take time to explore their new roosts and finally settle. So be patient, keep a watchful eye, and listen carefully below the box for any activity and sound. This can be a great way to get the whole family involved.
